Pollen on Your Car?

Daisy Pollen Particles

With springtime just around the corner, the air will be thick with pollen. Not only do these tiny particles bring about seasonal allergies, but pollen on your car can actually cause damage. As such, it’s important to know how to protect your car from pollen best.

Take one look at pollen under a microscope, and you will see figures covered in spikes. These sticky spikes are what allow pollen to propagate through the land. Unfortunately, sticky pollen on cars is bad news.

Does Pollen Damage Car Paint?

When seeing pollen on a car for the first time, the first question you may ask is “can pollen damage car paint.” Dried pollen on a car is concerning as it's actually acidic, and given enough time, will damage the car’s paint. If improperly removed, spiky pollen can scratch the paint. Additionally, pollen can clog various filters leading to costly maintenance bills.

How To Prevent Pollen on Car

  • Wash Off Pollen As Soon As Possible. Ensure to wash off the pollen with water either by yourself or through a car wash. While it may be tempting to brush off the pollen on your car hood, pollen is actually covered in spikes. When brushed off, these spikes can leave scratches in your paint.
  • Wax Your Car. Waxing your car not only enhances the look of your vehicle but also protects your car from pollen. After waxing, a protective layer will separate the pollen from your paint. The increased slickness of your exterior will also make it harder for pollen to stick. When it does, it’ll come off easier than before.
  • Windshield Water Repellent. You should take advantage of water repellents. The increased slickness will make it difficult for pollen to stick to your windows.

Check Your Filters

Cabin Air Filter Replacement

Outside of simple aesthetics, car pollen removal is essential to keeping your vehicle functional. During the season, your car’s filter will undoubtedly collect a lot of pollen. If pollen clogs the engine filter, the airflow might suffer, and engine performance will drop. If the cabin air filter is blocked, increased pollen could lead to decreased A/C flow and air quality.
